Gothic Spiderweb Kitchen Accessories from Sin in Linen

Whoo, I love getting mail! Dont you? This week I had some really fun stuff come my way, and the thing I was especially excited for were these Spider Web Kitchen Linens sent to me by my friends at Sin in Linen.* Thanks guys!



So, what they sent me was this lovely apron, modeled by yours truly:

And the matching oven mitt and pot holder set:





Unfortunately, when I actually went to use it I discovered something tragic: there was a little bit of water on the counter top and when the pot holder got a little wet the dye started to run, leaving blue over the spider webs.

Its kind of disappointing, especially since the pillows I reviewed from Sin in Linen over the summer didnt have that problem at all. I was a little nervous to wash them, since I didnt want to end up with completely blue stuff. Luckily I decided to just try completely rinsing the pot holder since it was already fairly blue, and when it dried the blue was gone. So apparently its just a matter of rinsing these out thoroughly before you use them and making sure all the black dye has gone, then it isnt as much of an issue.



Besides the blue dye scare, Im really happy with these products and theyre a great way to spook up the kitchen while youre making nice treats. Plus, one-size fits all, and at $22 for the apron and $14 for the pot holder and oven mitt set theyre sold at a great price. Maybe if youre really into it you could also add in a matching gothic Spider Web table cloth, and if I had my own place rather than a shared flat I would have loved to have decorated with that as well. Holiday presents for the spooky Goth in your life? Maybe!

Gothic Gold Decor

Silver and black is Goths ubiquitous color combination. Everything from classic Goth platform boots to Gothic jewelry and home decor tend to favor metallic tones in the silver, pewter, and nickel range. Thats wonderful for me as Ive always favored silver accents but lately Ive been expanding my horizons and looking into the options that other metallic tones can offer for a Gothic look.

When done right gold is luxe and has a great vintage vibe that I think goes very well with a Gothic decor scheme. Some people think that lots of gold looks tacky so I think the key is to use it subtly. The highlighting on this architectural wall is the perfect place to add just a touch of shimmer, which also helps reflect light to keep a black-painted room from looking too small.


Im still as much into minimalist gothic decor with a black and white palette as I was when I wrote my Minimalist Gothic Decor post a while back so the black and white basic color scheme catches my eye a lot here.


That being said, not everyone is as into that stark look as I am, and I understand that. Gold matches a lot of different colors so you can incorporate whatever accent colors your dark heart desires. Red, purple, dark green, and turquoise pop especially well when paired with gold. Black and gold also goes well with a variety of different styles and motifs. Occult imagery art deco, Greco Roman, and Art Nouveau are the ones Ive been most drawn to on my Pinterest board, but Egyptian motifs, Japanese laquorwork, and Medieval decor all often have gold touches.

Good news Ive a new Job! Bad news it means the Blog has to end

I wanted my 100th post to be a celebration, but unfortunately Ive been doing a lot of thinking the last few days and Ive decided to end the blog. As some of you know Im coming to the end of my PhD and Ive been thinking about what to do next.

Im doing an Astrophysics PhD you see, and thanks to the £80 million deficit that has hit UK astronomy since PPARC merged with the STFC Astronomy in the UK is almost dead in the water.

Combine this with a blossoming commercial exploitation of astronomy that currently in a vibrant upswing and Ive inevitably had to leave academia.

But thankfully not science!

Massive datasets are a great commercial asset at present (think google maps), and Ive a new job where Ill be using my scientific and computational modelling skills to combine the Sloan digital sky survey with user data, to work out positional vectors between the earth (at a specific time) and the vast numbers of celestial objects in the catalogue, including galaxies, quasars and stars. Ill even be utilising WMAP - the earliest image of the structure of the Universe ever taken.

This will lead to a radical improvement in various fields of predictive science. One I feel I can be at the forefront off. Hence Ill be involved with the launching of the first Astrophysical Prediction Survey service to combine tried and tested astro-psychological research with the massive datasets Astromoners are returning like Sloan and the WMAP survey.




The idea that your nature can be predicted by the motion of 9 planets will look quaint and positively ridiculous once Ive finished processing the 200 million celestial objects in the Sloan Catalog.

That and Astrology pays better. But its contradictory topic to the blog, so Im afraid ive got to let the blog go.

Golden Artist Colors Conference

Just heading back from the "Golden Gathering" in Florida, where I got a fresh dose of information on Golden products, but so much more!  Re-connecting with colleagues, meeting artists from all over the world, taking workshops and attending super informative talks and demos. Here are a few pix.  Ill put together more posts when I get home, with more links and video. 

Here is me (orange T-shirt, gray hair) in Adria Archs class on teaching intuitive painting.  She is right up my alley, and gave me some FABULOUS ideas for improving my teaching.  We did some really fun exercises that got us painting immediately, totally engaged in the process, without thinking and agonizing.  She got us to tap into that direct line between intuition and process.  I will be trying these in upcoming workshops.

Here are a few things that came out of one of Adrias exercises.

The venue wasnt too shabby, though it was not this sunny.

I took a watercolor workshop with Bianka Guna, in which we used Goldens new Qor watercolors.  Yes, that is Q  O  R, Qor, pronounced "core".  So Ill be experimenting with them in my studio and share with you.  The colors are intense and rich, and they work beautifully on many different grounds and substrates.

Here is Bianka.  She is an engaging teacher, very entertaining as well as knowledgeable.

This is one of the collograph plates I made in Shari Pratts workshop.  I have some better pix, which Ill share in a later post.  We used all kinds of textural materials and many of Goldens texture gels to make printing plates.

Then we printed using OPEN acrlyics, which have a long long long l o n g drying time. They are great for monoprinting because you can take your time working the paint into/on the plate.

Melanie Matthews

One more person I want to introduce you to (if you dont already know her) is Melanie Matthews.  I attended her slide talk on using Pinterest, and found her to be one of the most generous artists Ive met, in terms of sharing information.  Funny, fun, a GREAT presenter.  I would take a workshop with her any day.  Check out her Pinterest Boards and follow her.  OMG, what a wealth of carefully curated images she shares.
