Gravel Compatibility Is This Decades NJS

Gravel Compatibility Is This Decades NJS

[Please note: Due to popular demand (or at least lack of total indifference) the Bike Snob NYC/Walz Limited Edition Bicycle-Riding Hat™ is now back in stock while supplies last!]

I had the craziest dream after watching "Black Mirror" last night:

I woke up screaming, but my horror turned to delight when I fired up my personal computer and discovered that someone is Kickstarting the crabon tire lever of my dreams:

For far too long weve been forced make do with utterly reliable tire levers made from inferior lightweight, durable, and inexpensive nylon.  Weve longed to experience crabons fabled lateral stiffness and vertical compliance whilst prying our tire beads from our rims.  Now our day has finally come--and best of all, theyre GRAVEL COMPATIBLE!

Everybody knows the geometry of traditional tire levers is completely inappropriate for use with gravel tires, and that attempting to remove a gravel tire with such a lever can result in injury or even death.  How many cyclists have to die when theyre gravel-specific tires and rims reject their standard tire levers and send them flying like arrowheads right into riders hearts and jugulars?  In fact, Im pretty sure it was just such an ill-advised flat-repair attempt that caused the injury necessitating all this crazy tape:

After all, it was Archimedes who said:

Funny how people always leave off the most important part of the quote--though I suppose its the same for most platitudes:

Even those of a more recent vintage:

Eddy Merckx worship is a warning sign of terminal Fredness, right up there with using boutique embrocations and wearing Rapha sunglasses:

Interestingly, much of this review was about the thrilling experience of opening and holding the glasses, with very little information about what its like to actually wear them while riding:

Instead, open the black rectangular tin and lift out the glasses by the rubberized grips on their arms—arms that feel exceptionally sturdy despite being a smidge wider than a cocktail straw. Next, set aside the fleecy protective case, then unfold the information sheet and read it.

Apart from an obligatory sentence about the "clarity of the lens," and of course this:

You might even catch the curious glances of fellow riders who may or may not comment on the bold statement the sunglasses make and who may or may not silently resolve to keep refreshing the Rapha site until the often sold-out Flyweights are back in stock.

And if they do comment, its likely to be something along the lines of "How can you see through all that Euro-cheese?"

Speaking of Euro-cheese, there is life after pro cycling...and its the "thug life:"

Yes, where do you go from winning the Vuelta a España?  Why, robbing a mobile phone store, of course!

The 41-year-old was arrested early Tuesday morning “next to the property where the window had just been broken,” according to diarioinformacion.com. He claimed to have not been involved, and put the blame “on the person who accompanied him, whom he had met that night while they were partying.” He said that this other person broke the glass and then fled the scene.

Just another caper to add to his already impressive palmarès and/or rap sheet:

His first arrest came in 2007, for driving under the influence of alcohol and cocaine. A year later he was arrested for hiring three people to beat up someone who owed him money. That was followed in 2011 with an arrest for a bank scam.

Though in fairness to him, given the state of pro cycling in 2002, he probably broke far fewer laws during his post-career crime spree than he did in pursuit of that Vuelta win.  Indeed, by cycling standards hes got a fair amount of integrity, and if he keeps up the good work hell probably be UCI president by 2020.

Lastly, heres yet another news story about how to share the road American style:

(Warning: contains both an auto-play video and frequent misspelling of "pedal" as "peddle"...both of which you should expect by now from local TV news websites.)

Basically the victim was accompanying a paraplegic hand-cyclist during a charity ride, and so the driver rammed him from behind for riding too slowly:

However, the man still blared his horn at the cyclists. Sullivan went back and explained to the driver that Northbrook is a paraplegic and cant go that fast because he hand-peddles his bike.

"Weve gone 590 miles, give me 90 seconds, Ill have him up and over this grade, you can be on your way," Sullivan said he told the man. "Completely agitated, he says to me, I dont care if its f-ing God up there. Get out of the f-ing road."

Sullivan said thats when he stopped talking to the man and got back on his bike. The trucks driver accelerated and hit Sullivans bike, causing him to fall to the roadway.

Sullivan sustained several injuries.

Needless to say, the cops were ON IT:

"Just at that moment, coming in the opposite direction, is a cyclist who happens to be an off-duty Oceanside police officer," said Sullivan.

Sullivan said the officer called 911 and Carlsbad police arrived to speak with the trucks driver. However, the man wasnt arrested and was allowed to drive away.

Sure, he was wearing his helmet, but that doesnt mean we cant victim-blame, because Im sure this never would have happened had he been equipped with a pool noodle.

Getting My Feet Wet Reflecting on This Years Toe Dipping

Getting My Feet Wet Reflecting on This Years Toe Dipping

For four months out of this year, I have dedicated myself to exploring movies that I wouldnt normally take a look at. They made a huge gap in my movie watching, and I thought it was time to fill those gaps. In June, I checked out French New Wave. The month after that, I looked at Anime films - which was super helpful considering Im going to Japan next month/year. I took a break over August and September when I took a couple of breaks from blogging, but in October I was back into it with Horror films. Last month I took a deeper look into Nicolas Cages filmography. Theyre all wildly different movies, but I thought I may as well rank them from worst to best, just to show how these new discoveries panned out for me. So here are all 34 movies, ranked:

34. The Wicker Man (2006), Dir. Neil LaBute - Obviously. Although Nic Cage in a bear suit is probably going to be the most memorable experience Ill have of 2012 through the eyes of movies.
33. Gone in 60 Seconds (2000), Dir. Dominic Sena - Purely because that car-themed sex scene between Nicolas and Angelina Jolie. It was the most awkward thing ever.
32. Ghost Rider (2007), Dir. Mark Steven Johnson - Nicolas as a fearless stuntman? Yeah...no.

31. Suspiria (1977), Dir. Dario Argento - Easily the biggest disappointment of any toe dipping. Loved the art direction, but didnt feel the movie.
30. Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), Dir. Alain Resnais - I appreciated it, but so little resonated with me. I think thats because I was really tired when I saw it.
29. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009), Dir. Werner Herzog - Probably the craziest Cage Rage movie I saw last month. Still dont understand those reptiles (Ive said this three times now but no-one will answer me).

28. Halloween (1978), Dir. John Carpenter - Jamie Lee Curtis was awesome, but this wasnt all that scary.
27. Akira (1987), Dir. Katsuhiro Otomo - An interesting vision, but I have a hard time remembering most of it.
26. Paprika (2006), Dir. Satoshi Kon - Im just gonna say it: I liked Inception far more. Not that we should even be comparing.

25. The Evil Dead (1981), Dir. Sam Raimi - A damn good early movie from Sam Raimi. Still, I cant say I thoroughly enjoyed it, though.
24. Jules and Jim (1962), Dir. Francois Truffaut - It was interestingly made (and it has had a huge influence on the films of today), but it wasnt particularly memorable.
23. Wild at Heart (1990), Dir. David Lynch - An interesting take on a love story influenced by The Wizard of Oz. I actually like it more and more with each day.

22. The 400 Blows (1959), Dir. Francois Truffaut - I didnt find it as excitingly easy to relate to as everyone else seems to, but there was plenty to like about the film that practically introduced French New Wave.
21. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Dir. Tim Burton - It isnt often that I like Tim Burton movies but this musical horror was pretty cool.
20. Lord of War (2005), Dir. Andrew Niccol - A definite eye-opener of a film. Even though Nicolas Cage is largely miscast, I did enjoy this film by Kiwi Andrew Niccol.

19. Howls Moving Castle (2004), Dir. Hayao Miyazaki - A mystical tale which I didnt love, but definitely thought was beautiful.
18. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), Dir. Robert Weine - The oldest film on the list, and also the oldest feature Ive seen thus far, was beautifully made and had an awesome twist.
17. Au Hasard Balthazar (1966), Dir. Robert Bresson - An extremely sad tale of a donkeys life. I cant handle these sorts of films.

16. Spirited Away (2001), Dir. Hayao Miyazaki - All I can say is that I wish that I watched this at a different time when the world wasnt so awful to be in.
15. The Cabin in the Woods (2011), Dir. Drew Godard - So much fun. Ive come to appreciate it more since my first watch. Joss Whedon is awesome.
14. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006), Dir. Mamoru Hosoda - Apart from the fact that the main character was a bit of a spastic, I really enjoyed this one.

13. Millennium Actress (2001), Dir Satoshi Kon - A heart-breaking little film. I loved how the TV crew actually followed the actress through her memories.
12. Poltergeist (1982), Dir. Tobe Hooper - Even though it is more Steven Spielberg than Tobe Hooper, it is still a really interesting horror film.
11. Face/Off (1997), Dir. John Woo - One of the biggest surprises for me. As someone who doesnt love 90s action films, this one was really enjoyable.

10. Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962), Dir. Agnes Varda - I saw this a whole month before I decided to dip my toes in French New Wave, and Im glad that this film started it all.
9. Scream (1996), Dir. Wes Craven - I did not expect to enjoy this movie as much as I did. It is a whole lot of meta fun.
8. The Blair Witch Project (1999), Dir. Daniel Myrick, Eduardo Sanchez - I admit, this movie had me scared to walk down my own hall way.

7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Dir. Tobe Hooper - Every time I look back on this it seems scarier and scarier. I will never look at chainsaws the same. And now my Mum think shes gonna buy herself one.
6. Adaptation. (2002), Dir. Spike Jonze - Just so awesome. And one of the few times where I never felt like I was watching Nicolas Cage.
5. Breathless (1960), Dir. Jean-Luc Godard - Jean Seberg lived such a tragic life, but she was so wonderful in this movie. A good movie for me, since I love hearing people talk.

4. My Neighbour Totoro (1988), Dir. Hayao Miyazaki - So amazingly cute. I cant wait to go to Japan so I can buy as many Totoro things as possible.
3. The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964), Dir. Jacques Demy - A tragic story dressed up in the most beautiful colours and songs. Catherine Deneuve is flawless.
2. Vivre Sa Vie (1962), Dir. Jean-Luc Godard - A wonderful movie that comes to a tragic end. Anna Karina gives a stellar performance. The conversation between her and the old man at the restaurant remains one of the best things Ive ever seen.

1. Grave of the Fireflies (1988), Dir. Isao Takahata - I never expected to cry so much at the end of this. No animated movie has got me quite like this since Toy Story 3. And thats saying something. Such a tragic tale, Ill never know how they could ever put it to animation.

So, what do you think? Got any favourites of these titles?
